"P5 - Review the trends and factors that are currently affecting the travel and tourism sector"
Ryan Mortimer

P5
There is many trends and factors that are currently affecting te travel and tourism sector. These consist of an increased frequency of holidays, increase in holiday home ownership, greater flexibility of booking, more independant travel and also allows the opportunity for adventure.
Increase frequency of holidays
In the early stages of the travel and tourist industry people would only go on one main holiday a year. Holidays that they took throughout the year would usually be domestic holidays for either a short break or visiting family. However, over the last few years holidays have become alot more popular and alot easier to book and sort out therefore alot more people are going away on holidays more frequently.
Domestic holidays have also become alot more popular due to people only wanting short breaks away. Nowadays people have a better working conditions so that means that tourist are able to take more holidays away and more short breaks with the family. Due to employments rate being up in the UK currently this indicates that more people have money to spend; some will save this money up but also many will be going on holidays often around the Mediterranean.
Increase in holiday home ownership
Holiday home ownership in the UK has become increasingly popular since the recession with more and more people taking regular breaks within the UK. In 2009 the number of holiday homes that are now owner in Britain has increased by 4.8% from 2009. In the coming years, it is predicted that there will be an increase of overseas visitors to Britain and with people purchasing holiday home more often they are likely to stay over for a short break away. Its not just families that decide to purchase these holiday homes, but also couples that like to get away for a few days and single people who are looking for a second home that they can go to that offers an affordable price.
Having a holiday home takes away the stress of air fares, transfers, exchange rates and foreign languages. By having a home it can have negative and positive effect on the travel and tourism industry. The positive effect would be that people are going to travel abroad more often and buy flights from around their area and keep on going over to their holiday home for a break and a holiday. If people from overseas bought a holiday home over in the UK it would be good for us because people are coming over into out country and spending their money. The negative effect would be that people would stop using hotels for their accommodation because their accommodation is already there therefore this means hotels are getting less profit.
More Independent Travellers
Travelling independently has become increasingly popular as now there is a lot more people who like to travel. People now are alot more confident about travelling overseas alone. With this confidence it has lead an increasingly number of people not booking on a 'package' holiday so they are more independent on their travel.
In a recent survey carried out by ITW, nearly half of people they surveyed considered themselves to be independent travellers. (44%). People are deciding to travel independently as due to advertisment it has made traveling overseas independently more attractive. This has a negative effect on the travel agents and the tour operators because fewer people are now booking their holidays through these companys as they are booking them over the internet. This is a negative things because some time people dont book them with ATOL and ABTA. This could also have another negative aspect as now when people travel and if something goes wrong they are no longer covered.
